Status of the above-knee suction socket in the United States.

چکیده
1 HE above-knee suction socket constitutes a means of attaching an artificial leg to the stump of an amputee without necessity for the conventional pelvic band, a metal hip joint, or other types of suspension harness (Fig. 1). The leg is held on by the slight vacuum created in the socket each time the leg is lifted from the ground, the pressure usually being controlled by a valve installed in the lower portion of the socket. Accurate functional fit of the socket, as distinguished from the conventional "plug" fit, permits the creation of negative pressure, gives a wider range of muscular control of the leg, and provides comfort while walking or sitting. Because the conventional belt and hinge joint are eliminated, the suction socket gives the above-knee amputee more freedom and less interference with clothing. The leg feels more like an integral part of the body, a feature which tends to decrease the sensation of dead weight and to improve sense of position. Reduced piston action of the stump in the socket results in greater toe clearance during walking. No stump sock is necessary. Any adductor roll is corrected. And finally, active use of the stump muscles causes them to develop instead of becoming atrophied.3

The Results of Slip Measurements in Above-knee Suction Sockets
Slip is defined, in this study, as relative motion between the stump skin and the socket. An excessive amount of slip may lead to abrasive injury, inadequate control over socket position and, ultimately, possible loss of the prosthesis. Conversely, lack of slip may conceivably reflect excessive restraint obtained by too tight a fit; implicit are large stump socket pressures. This study was cond...

In addition to its geographic prominence, the Middle East region possesses an important position in foreign policy of great powers especially the United States. Through the implementation of different policies, these powers seek to secure their interests and interpret historical events into their own interests. Muslim nations' uprising is one of the most important developments in the Middle Eas...
متن کاملThe TC double socket above-knee prosthesis.
The conventional total contact suction AK prosthesis presents several disadvantages, such as difficulty in wearing the socket in a sitting position, difficulty in obtaining a favourable disposition of the stump soft tissues in the socket and difficulty in avoiding stump perspiration problems. In an attempt to solve these disadvantages, a new AK prosthesis with a thermoplastic double socket was ...
متن کاملTangential pressure measurements in above-knee suction sockets.
Tangential pressure (TP) , as defined in this study, is that pressure parallel to and located at the socket inner face. The talrgential pressure resultant (TP,) will possess a horizontal component (TP,) directed along an axis perpendicular to the main socket axis and a vertical component (TP,) directed along the main socket axis (see Fig. 1). The plane in which all tangential pressures exist is...

Background: Through-knee amputation provides a longer lever arm and improved muscle control of the limb compared with above-knee amputation. Through-knee amputation also allows use of a total end-bearing prosthesis, which avoids the ischial pressure and suspension belts required of the above-knee amputation prosthesis. Several reports in the European literature tout the superiority of the throu...
